It’s rare that we get an Artist Drop interview from a new artist, especially one who has gotten significant buzz within just days of their debut release. Combining a symphony of R&B and Neo-Classic Soul, a sound most new artists are afraid to dive into successfully, Needletime Record’s pop-defying artist IMAN delivers a sound that will prove to be memorable to any listener. Her debut E.P. “Decipher” features 5 tracks, all written by IMAN, and are a must-listen for everyone (I should warn you that her songs are highly addicting).

We interviewed Iman about the meaning behind the title, her musical inspirations, and a sneak peek into the life of a 16-year-old prodigy.

“When did you start singing and songwriting?”

When I was about 6 years old I wrote my first song on the piano, it was terrible, but helped me start my journey of music!

“Why did you name your EP “Decipher” ?”

A lot of people listen to music for the beat or the melody, but when people hear my songs I want them to “decipher” the message that I’m trying to convey to people.

“What age did you begin to take music seriously? “

Around 11 years old, I met my producer, and he helped open my eyes to different genres and artists which influenced me a lot. Since then my music style has changed and is continuing to change.

“When you write a song what is your creative process like?”

I usually write the melody first, then write lyrics to fit the tone of the music.

” “Decipher” recently released. What message do you want to tell your fans about your EP?”

When you write music for yourself and not from the pressure to please others, your music will always come out better. Music is a passion, not a profession.

“What song was the most challenging to finish?”

Counterfeit was definitely a very complex song, because it challenged me vocally and also had many background vocals. Doing things I had never done before required a lot of patience, but it was worth it.

“Out of all of your family members who is the toughest critic of your music? “

My Brother is my toughest critic! He has helped me to see that when I can get other people to feel how I felt when writing the song, the emotion is what gets people to connect with you. So Despite my brother being so tough, without him, I’d truly be lost.
